Iran deepens ties with Central Asian countries

The Jerusalem Post, citing Iranian state media, reports that Iran’s foreign minister held talks with his Turkmen counterpart, Rashid Meredov, and that the discussion with Turkmenistan is part of a plan for broad Iranian engagement across Central Asia aimed at improving trade ties and building the North–South international transport corridor (INSTC).

The Israeli newspaper also reports that Iran held similar talks with representatives of Uzbekistan, noting a remark by Iran’s agriculture minister, Nouri Ghezeljeh, that Iran can provide Uzbekistan with engineering services, training and research in livestock farming and drip irrigation, the construction of low-cost greenhouses, the building of warehouses and cold stores for storage, and technology for disinfecting agricultural produce.

In the newspaper’s view, Iran is seeking to expand trade rapidly with the countries of the region and to establish solid air and rail links with Central Asian states. This should offset the losses from the severing of economic ties with Western countries.
