The Development Road international transport corridor (ITC)

The Development Road ITC is meant to connect the Persian Gulf with Europe via Iraq and Türkiye. The project has been agreed by Türkiye, Iraq, Qatar and the UAE, and construction is due to be completed by 2028. If it goes ahead, Türkiye will become a key country between East and West, with freight flows passing through its territory.

The project provides for the construction of 1,200 km of road and rail linking Türkiye to Iraq. The transport link will connect the Gulf states with Europe. The Development Road is expected to cost around $17 billion.

The Development Road ITC is the shortest route between the East and Europe. According to available information, cargo transit times along the corridor could fall to 25 days, whereas shipping via the Suez Canal and the Cape of Good Hope (in southern Africa) takes 35 and 45 days respectively.
