This chart shows that China produces eight times as many STEM graduates each year as the United States, according to 2016 data from Statista. It is no accident that China is the world’s industrial centre.

Russia and Iran rank fourth and fifth by the number of such graduates. In per capita terms, however, Russia comes first, followed by Iran, whose population is around 90–95 million.

STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) is an umbrella term used to group these separate but closely related technical disciplines together when describing institutional education policy, school curricula and supplementary training.

STEM disciplines usually cover the natural sciences (biology, physics and chemistry) and the formal sciences (mathematics, logic and statistics).
